With a wide-ranging, singular and successful journey as the one travelled by Liz Ogumbo. hailing all the way from Kenya, multidisplinary creative entrepreneur & consultant Liz Ogumbo was recently celebrated at the Conrad Hotel in Dubai as one of the titans Of Africa featured on the current Titans of Africa Coffee Table book.

The book features 50 Africans from 39 countries and 18 verticals. Titans must have high integrity and standards, business leaders, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs in the diaspora and across Africa. In addition, to be very active in the local and international communities, illustrated business acumen, triumphed over significant obstacles and was hugely successful in their markets

Through the gala dinner, Ogumbo showcased her ‘unplastic’ collection under her fashion brand label, ‘Liz Ogumbo.’ This fashion collection is created from waste as her way to sensitize the world on the importance of cleaning up the fashion industry’s pollution to the environment through how we consume just as well as how we produce fashion.

While unplasticing fashion is a complex job that requires the whole world’s understanding followed by action, through expertise from the industry, government, and academia there is a need to address plastic leakage at multiple levels, from the production, fabrication, usage, and washing of synthetic textiles to waste water treatment plants. The ‘unplastic’ collection debuted in Dubai has undoubtedly fired up the conversation around sustainability in fashion, the second most polluting industry in the world.

Liz Ogumbo’s sustainable fashion brand advocates for circularity in fashion to reduce the carbon footprint hence save our environment,. It is no secret that the fashion industry leaves a big footprint on the planet. In order to create consumer awareness of the impact of our spending choices while further sensitizing the fashion consumer, the ‘unplastic’ collection is here to open up this conversation.

The ‘unplastic’ collection employs wardrobe versatility highlighting a friendly styling clash Juxtaposing abstract geometric-inspired fashion pieces created out of biodegradable plastic and used newspaper along with tribal print Ogumbo & Okubo swimwear pieces created out of recycled sea trash.

Throughout this ‘unplastic’ collection, you will see abundant use of strips of used newspaper that create texture on the clear biodegradable plastic through shapes and lines along with key words that represent cleaning up of the fashion industry; a major contributor to the depletion of our environment as well as climate change.

While Liz flirts with a variety of different hints of newspaper prints and textures along with key words that represent her 5R movement (Re-use | Reduce | Recycle | Repair |Resell) the collaboration of these prints brings to life one-of-a-kind ‘juxtaposition’ appeal through her unique styling detail throughout her ‘unplastic’ Collection.

High-waisted A-Line skirts for the day-to-day dames, slim tailored pants, Front slit ‘hi-lo’ dresses, classic fitted, well-tailored jackets and trench coats. cropped jackets and intricate hand-beaded-Body-Jewellery. Juxtaposed textures through the convertible layers of fun prints and volumetric form all make this collection worthwhile.

This collection employs a few colours including white, black, newspaper print complimented by a splurge of colour from the Ogumbo & Okubo swimwear range.

Liz’s clothing is recognised for its whimsical flair, with touches of both elegance and playfulness through influences from her music and African culture. Her jackets and bag linings feature her music, KenSoul lyrics and despite her meticulous detail, her fashion brand retails for less than her competitors.

Over the past decade, this formidably focused Kenyan has established herself as creative entrepreneur whose work in music, fashion, wine and media. Through all these, she shares an enviable commitment to excellence and to fostering relationships and projects that advance the African creative industries globally.

While the recent Titans of Africa gala dinner and book launch was attended by many VIP dignitaries and several media houses, Vikas Bhargava, the author and publisher of this coffee table book was delighted to announce; “..this book is one of my most classic editions of all time, there is so much to see and learn from Africa.”
