The Invitation Was Never the Wine

Every meaningful gathering begins before the first guest arrives.

Over the past month, three remarkable people have unexpectedly found their way to my table.

One doesn't drink wine at all. Yet we've shared evenings together where conversation flowed so naturally that the untouched glass almost became irrelevant.

Another loves wine as much as I do. What began as a simple introduction quickly turned into hours of conversation that felt less like meeting for the first time and more like continuing a story that had somehow paused years ago.

The third also doesn't drink wine. Yet without hesitation, she shared my Wine Wisdom & Wonders™ masterclass with her community—not because she loves wine, but because she believed in what I was building.

Three people.

Three entirely different relationships with wine.

One recurring table.

And somewhere between pouring the first glass and saying our goodbyes, I found myself asking a simple question.

Perhaps the invitation was never the wine.

Perhaps it was always something else.

Wine has a beautiful way of slowing us down.

It asks us to pause.

To notice.

To taste.

To listen.

Sometimes the conversation becomes the finest vintage of the evening.

Much like the philosophy championed by the global Slow Food movement, the act of sharing food and wine is often less about consumption and more about presence.

I've begun to realise that the most memorable evenings are rarely remembered because of what was poured into the glass.

They're remembered because of what was poured into the conversation.

The stories.

The laughter.

The unexpected moments of honesty.

The comfortable silences that somehow say more than words ever could.

For years, I believed I was inviting people to share a glass of wine.

Now I wonder if I was really inviting them to share something far more valuable.

Their time.

Their curiosity.

Their presence.

Perhaps that's why it never seems to matter whether someone drinks wine or not.

The table has never asked for identical tastes.

Only open hearts.

Author and gathering expert Priya Parker reminds us that meaningful gatherings are defined not by what is served, but by the purpose that brings people together.

Some evenings, the wine disappears before the conversation ends.

Other evenings, the conversation makes us forget the wine altogether.

Either way...

Everyone leaves carrying something.

I've also realised something else.

The finest hosts don't collect guests.

They recognise souls.

Not in some mystical sense.

But in the quiet recognition that happens when two strangers suddenly begin speaking as though they've known each other for years.

When business conversations become life conversations.

When introductions become friendships.

When time quietly loses its urgency.

Those moments cannot be planned.

They can only be welcomed.

Every table deserves a soundtrack.

Looking back, I see that every meaningful chapter of my own journey began around a table.

Some tables celebrated new beginnings.

Others held difficult conversations.

Some welcomed old friends.

Others introduced complete strangers who somehow felt familiar from the very beginning.

Every table carried the possibility of transformation.

Not because of what was served.

But because someone chose to stay.

To listen.

To remain curious.

Maybe that's why I continue setting the table with such intention.

The flowers.

The candles.

The music drifting softly through the room.

The careful choice of glassware.

The bottle waiting patiently to be opened.

None of it is about creating perfection.

It's about creating permission.

Permission to arrive exactly as we are.

Without performance.

Without expectation.

Without needing to become anyone other than ourselves.

Hospitality pioneer Danny Meyer once wrote that hospitality is present when people feel seen. I couldn't agree more.

Perhaps that's what hospitality has always meant to me.

Not entertaining.

Not impressing.

Not performing.

Simply creating a space where people feel seen.

Because the wine was never the destination.

It was simply the invitation.

The real destination has always been human connection.

Perhaps that's what Vine to Soul™ has always been about.

Not simply exploring wine.

But creating spaces where stories travel more freely than business cards.

Where conversations linger longer than reservations.

Where strangers become friends.

And where, sometimes, a single evening quietly changes the course of your life.

Perhaps...

that's the finest vintage any of us will ever discover.
