The Art of Staying a Little Longer

"FROM MY TABLE"
"A series of reflections on wine, culture, hospitality, creativity and the art of gathering"

I have never trusted dinners that end too quickly.
You know the kind.
The plates are cleared.
Chairs begin to scrape against the floor.
Phones reappear.
And before the wine has even finished breathing, everyone is already halfway out the door.
Some evenings are efficient.
Others are memorable.
The memorable ones usually have one thing in common:
Nobody is in a hurry to leave.
Someone pours another glass.
A story begins.
A memory surfaces.
Laughter erupts.
The candles burn lower.
And somehow, without anyone noticing, an ordinary evening becomes something else entirely.
An experience.
A memory.
A moment that stays with you.
I have often wondered why these evenings linger in our hearts long after they end.
I think it is because they remind us of something we are increasingly hungry for:
Presence.
The Age of Hurry
We live in an age of immediacy.
Instant messaging.
Same-day delivery.
Meals eaten in transit.
Conversations interrupted by notifications.
We have become experts at saving time.
Yet many of us feel as though we have less of it than ever before.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF), loneliness and social isolation are emerging as significant global concerns, affecting our health, well-being and sense of belonging.
Perhaps what we are truly missing is not another app, another meeting or another notification.
Perhaps we are missing the permission to slow down.
To linger.
To stay.
Hospitality Is the Art of Making Time Expand
I have come to believe that true hospitality has very little to do with perfection.
It is not the expensive bottle.
Nor the elaborate table setting.
Nor the flawless menu.
Hospitality is a feeling.
It is making people feel seen.
Welcomed.
Comfortable enough to stay a little longer.
Some of the greatest hosts I have ever met possessed no formal training.
They simply understood the quiet art of presence.
They knew how to create an atmosphere where conversation could breathe.
Where stories could unfold.
Where time seemed to soften around the edges.
Decades of research from the Harvard Study of Adult Development continue to show that the quality of our relationships is one of the strongest predictors of happiness and long-term well-being.
Perhaps that is why the evenings we remember are rarely the extravagant ones.
They are the ones where we felt most connected.
The Luxury of Lingering
Luxury today is changing.
Research from McKinsey & Company and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) suggests that people increasingly value meaningful experiences and connection over simply accumulating possessions.
Perhaps the new luxury is not another thing.
Perhaps it is:
an uninterrupted conversation,
a beautifully set table,
a glass of wine shared slowly,
an evening with nowhere else to be.
The luxury of lingering.
The Music of the Table
Every memorable table has a soundtrack.
I cannot remember every bottle I have shared.
But I remember the songs.
I remember Etta James singing softly in the background while a conversation turned unexpectedly vulnerable.
Music has a curious way of stretching time.
Like wine, it asks us to remain present.
To stay with the moment just a little longer.
Perhaps this is why the best evenings never happen in silence.
They happen in rhythm.
In melody.
In the spaces between stories and songs.
The Curious Language of Dress
I have also noticed that tables have their own unspoken dress codes.
No invitation required.
Somehow, everyone arrives wearing white—as though the evening has called for lightness and renewal.
Other times, every guest appears in black.
Elegant.
Reflective.
Almost ceremonial.
As though we have all gathered, knowingly or unknowingly, to honour something deeper.
A table has energy.
A mood.
A spirit.
And we often dress ourselves accordingly.
Perhaps gathering is our oldest form of choreography.
An instinctive dance of colour, mood and belonging.
Wine Knows This Secret
Perhaps this is why wine has endured for centuries.
Wine refuses to be rushed.
It asks us to pause.
To pour.
To smell.
To taste.
To notice.
According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), wine consumers increasingly seek authenticity, storytelling and experience-driven engagement.
And often, one glass quietly becomes another conversation.
Another story.
Another hour spent in good company.
Wine is not merely a beverage.
It is an invitation.
Stay.
Just a little longer.

The Evenings We Remember
Years from now, I suspect we will remember very little about our busiest days.
But we will remember:
the friend who stayed until midnight,
the dinner that became a celebration,
the conversation that changed our perspective,
the laughter that made our cheeks ache,
the song that was playing when someone shared a truth,
the way candlelight softened every face around the table.
The evenings that stretched unexpectedly into memory.
A Glass to Leave You With…
The next time you find yourself around a table, resist the urge to rush.
Pour another glass.
Ask one more question.
Tell one more story.
Stay a little longer.
Because some of life's greatest gifts arrive only after we stop watching the clock.
Until next time…
Sip with Wisdom. Live with Wonder.
